Home Alarm Systems: The 4 Layers Of Defense

If you want to increase the security of your home, one of the best ways to do so is by installing a security system in your home. A security system will allow you to monitor your home on a deeper level. Starting with motion alarms, progressing to function-specific detectors, security cameras, and remote monitoring

1. The First Layer of Defense: Motion Alarms

When you have a home security alarm installed, there are some basics that are usually put in place. Motion sensors are added to all the exterior doors. They are usually added to all first story windows as well as any upper-level windows that are easy to access as well. The most basic home security alarms consist of motion detectors for your windows and doors.

2. The Second Layer of Defense: Function Specific Detectors

Beyond door and window motion alarms, there are lots of other alarms that can be installed in your home. If your home uses gas for heating or cooking, it is essential to have a carbon monoxide detector in your home. If flooding is common in your area, a water-level detector can be installed. You can also install a water-level detector near bathtubs and sinks to make sure that you are alerted if they ever overflow. If your home has a furnace, a furnace failure detector can be added to your home as well.

3. The Third Layer of Defense: Security Cameras

If you want even more security, you can add video surveillance to your home security system. Video surveillance can be as simple as a camera that monitors the entrances to your home, or as complex as an integrated system has cameras inside and outside of your home. Video surveillance can allow you to remotely monitor what is happening inside and outside of your home. Video surveillance can also allow you to go back and time and figure out what happened to your home or who visited your home.

4. The Fourth Layer of Defense: Remote Monitoring

Once you have a security system in place, you need to determine how you want to monitor the system. You can have your alarm set-up so that it just emits a signal that you can hear to alert you that your alarm has been triggered.

Or you can have your alarms set-up so that you are sent a signal to your phone whenever one of the alarms or detectors is tripped or activated. Or you can pay a security company to monitor your alarms. When an alarm goes off, they will verify that the alarm was not accidentally triggered, and then will call the appropriate emergency response team to come assist you.

Increase the security of your home with a home alarm system. A basic alarm system starts with motion alarms on your windows and doors. For more protection, you can add function-specific detectors, such as fire alarms, carbon monoxide detectors, and water detectors. You can increase your security even more by adding security cameras and remote monitoring. The more layers of defense you add to your home security system, the more protected you and your family will be.
